HISTORY

Morning Star Lodge, originally called Village Lodge, "was formed so that Masons living more than 20 miles from any regularly constituted Lodge would be enabled to assemble as a regular Lodge of Masons in the house of Winston Day, near the outlet of Skaneateles Lake in the town of Marcellus." At a renumbering of lodges in 1819, its number (80) was assigned to another lodge, by which it would appear that the original body had become extinct.

Morning Star Lodge No. 290 was warranted June 5, 1817, the warrant being signed by M:.W:. Dewitt Clinton, Grand Master. There were 25 Charter members and, in its ten year history, five were affiliated and 49 were raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. The last record of Morning Star Lodge No. 290 is dated April 14, 1829 with the exception of a hand written entry dated March 22, 1841.

Morning Star Lodge No. 524 was warranted June 16, 1862, the warrant being signed by M:.W:. John J. Crane, Grand Master. The first communication of Morning Star Lodge, under dispensation, was held on Wednesday evening, January 29, 1862 at 7:00 o'clock with W:. E.P. Howe, Master; Henry C. Sarr, Senior Warden; John North, Junior Warden; Ben F. Moses, Secretary; Irving Moses, Senior Deacon; Belus S. Cobb, Junior Deacon; Edward Phillips, Tiler. At the second communication of the Lodge, held February 5, 1862, George W. Platt and Charles W. Hovey were duly accepted and initiated Entered Apprentices. Robert Julia was accepted and initiated at the next communication held February 12.

There were 12 charter members, the oldest being Jacob W. Cook, oldest not only in years, but in Masonry as well, he having been a member of Morning Star Lodge No. 290 when it existed; William A. Sharp who was made a Mason in Apollo Lodge No. 13, Troy, NY in 1851; Edwin Phillips, a member of Scipio Lodge No. 110, Cayuga County. Five of the members were made Masons in Jordan Lodge No. 386, Jordan, NY, namely John A. Platt in1857; Henry C. Sarr and Belus F. Cobb, 1858; John North, 1859 and Frederick A. Lyman, 1860. The remaining four were made Masons in Central City Lodge No. 305, Syracuse, NY, namely Elisha P. Howe in 1860, and Irving Moses, B.F. Moses and Seth D. Gilbert in 1861.

The charter of Morning Star Lodge No. 524 was granted June 16, 1862, and on Tuesday evening July 1, 1862, the Lodge was duly constituted into a regular lodge in due form, agreeable to the ancient usages and customs of the fraternity and the officers installed by M:.W:. John G. Webster as Grand Master, assisted by R:.W:. George W. Harwood and several other Brothers the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of the State of New York. The first set of Masonic Regalia was received as a donation from Lexington Lodge No. 310, Brooklyn, NY. This was later donated to another newly formed lodge. The Lodge first met in the Hellgans Building, which was on the site of the present St. Francis Church parking lot. They then moved to the Walker-Sayre Building, which is now the Ryan Funeral Home, just west of the present temple. In 1907, they moved to rooms over the Post Office, on the northeast corner of North & Main, where they stayed until May 1, 1926, when the present temple was purchased from Mr. & Mrs. Leonard G. Smith.

In 1997, Morning Star Lodge No. 524 absorbed the members of Sapphire Lodge No. 768, bringing with them many Past Masters and Right Worshipfuls to complement the vast experience and expertise of those from Morning Star.

Our best known Brother is Past Grand Master Most Worshipful Bruce Widger. M:.W:. Widger served as Worshipful Master in 1961, District Deputy Grand Master in 1970-71, Deputy Grand Master in 1978-79 and Grand Master in 1980-81.
